The 20 Most Addictive Sites, 2010
April, 2010
These websites are a guilty pleasure for many... they have an addictive appeal, and lend themselves to at least 30 mins of browsing per day, depending on your personal tastes. As you peruse the changing list below, remember that "SFW" stands for "Safe for Work", where the sites have clean content suitable for most viewers. Be warned, however: unless the site is expressly tagged as SFW below, be careful before you open it. Also: if you have a site to suggest for this ever-changing list: submit your favorite addictive website here...
1. Overstock.com
SFW: Overstock.com is about upscale bargain shopping. As a 3rd party clearance center, Overstock helps retailers unload surplus of brand name and designer consumer items. DKNY clothing, Samsung cameras, Callaway golf clubs, Tag Heuer wristwatches, Nine West shoes, memory foam bedding, Vincenzi men's suits, designer travel gear for pets... some absolutely beautiful products are available here, often for less than 50% of retail price.
2. There: I Fixed It!
SFW: "Kludging" is about poorly assembling a solution to a problem. In the case of ThereIfixedIt.com, we are talking about kludging to the tenth power! See some outlandish examples of how to fix automobile steering, toilet problems, and home renovations. These are not photoshopped images... every submission here is a candid photo of real-life DIY nightmares. This safe-for-work site is guaranteed for good chuckles, and you could probably show this to your boss and have her laugh with you, too.
3. 2Leep: The Best Hub for Bizarre News
This site is Addictive with a capital "A". 2Leep stands out because it is a hub of thousands of fascinating blogs and photo collections from around the world. See videos of trucks being lifted by the wind. See bizarre furniture and pet hairdos. See Bob Dullam's homemade batmobile. See the worst celebrity twins of all time. The content is so dynamic at 2Leep, you'll want to visit twice a day to see the updates. Addictiveness factor: 6/5
4. WonderHowTo.com
SFW: How to breathe fire. How to flirt like a pro. How to cut a beer bottle in half. How to tell the difference between a prostitute and an undercover cop. How to steal a Guinness record for free throwing. How to turn your car into an armored tank. How to levitate a Zippo flame. How to detect nukes. WonderHowTo.com is a delicious buffet of engineering, ingenuity, and curiousity. Addiction factor = 5/5
5. Fail Blog
"Schadenfreude" is the German word for "deriving pleasure from the misfortune of others". FailBlog delivers schadenfreude in wholesale servings! This photo and video blog captures some of the most tragic human mistakes you will ever see. Here you'll find horrifying examples of car parking errors, sports mishaps, advertising faux pas, bad clothing choices, and absurd human inventions. Like many of the addictive websites in this list: there are no special effects or professional actors involved: just regular everyday people doing absolutely idiotic things. Addictiveness: 5/5
6. Cute Overload
SFW: Even if you're not a pet owner , you'll enjoy this website. Cuteoverload.com is a photo blog of user-submitted pet photos and videos. The objective is to showcase the adorable and endearing qualities of our four-legged and avian family members. Whether you're a softy at heart, or a macho tough guy, you're guaranteed to get your daily dose of "awwwwwwww" at this addictive photo website.
7. Fark: The Bizarre News Aggregator
SFW: Fark is an aggregator for bizarre and weird news. That means: offbeat and unusual news stories from around the globe are assembled at this one website for quick browsing. Read about kangaroos goaded into fighting clowns, cross-dressing sensitivity training for policemen, undertakers who raise money by offering free limo rides, naked air traffic controllers, homeless people who become famous chefs, robbers who target celebrity homes, chickens who adopt puppies. Bizarre? Yes. Addictive? You better believe it...
8. Totally Looks Like...
Visual people will absolutely love this. Random associations of images from around the world: trees that resemble phones, vegetables that resemble people, gargoyles that resemble pets, celebrities that resemble your cousin. Submit your own, if you feel like it. At the very least: you'll be mesmerized by some of the curious combinations at this photo blog.
9. YouTube: "Related Videos"
SFW: It's not just that these amateur videos are very engaging... it's that there are thousands of them linked together. If you start to browse the column of "related videos" to the right of each clip, you'll be hooked. For example: you start watching "car reviews Honda CRV", and pretty soon, you are browsing the car reviews of every one of its competitors. Even better: search for "talking dogs" or "Einstein the Genius Bird" and you'll be laughing for hours. Addictiveness factor: 5/5
10. Despair: Demotivational Posters
SFW: Here is sarcasm and cynicism, made beautiful. As an antithesis to motivational posters, Despair.com takes inspirational photography and captions it with negative and cynical slogans. The effect is splendid, and is guaranteed laughter in offices everywhere. In fact, you might want to show this site to your office coworkers.
